This category is so boring this year, IMO. Leona or M.I.A. should win, but I think one of the AOTY nominees will win it.
SHOULD WIN: "Bleeding Love," Leona Lewis -OR- "Paper Planes," M.I.A. WILL WIN: "Viva La Vida," Coldplay SPOILER: "Please Read The Letter," Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Paper Planes is too polarizing, Chasing Pavements was too small and really doesn't leave much impact, Bleeding Love leans too urban.
Both these tracks are amazing, and it's totally gonna come down to which artist they want to give the award to. Do they want to allow a Plant/Krauss sweep?
Grammy FYC: Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak; Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D.; John Legend, Evolver; Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; David Guetta, One Love; Kelly Clarkson, "Already Gone"; Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield"; Kings Of Leon, "Use Somebody"; Maxwell, "Pretty Wings"
I would really love it if "Bleeding Love" wins ROTY but NARAS always seems not to award the nominated song with the biggest commercial success. I think they'll award Coldplay again in this category. I'm still crossing my fingers for "Bleeding Love".
WILL WIN: Coldplay - "Viva La Vida" SHOULD WIN: Leona Lewis - "Bleeding Love"
Not a dud in the bunch. And this is from someone who thinks Coldplay's latest work is vastly overrated.
Can't really see "Chasing Pavements" or even "Bleeding Love" taking this. Would give my right arm to see "Paper Planes" win (what an awesome nomination choice) but I think this is between "Viva La Vida" and "Please Read the Letter". And either one would be very deserving.
But realistically I think "Viva La Vida" will win.

This category is usually pretty easy to narrow down. Only two types of artists win this award: those who are major forces in the music industry and those who voters think will be. Look back at the past winners. You have to get back to 1982 and Toto to find a lightweight that has won this category. Even more than AOTY, this is where the industry rewards its most important members.
So, you can immediately knock "Bleeding Love" out of your predictions. Lewis is the definition of the kind of lightweight that doesn't win here. One hit wonder? Check. Just a singer with no instruments? Check. Endlessly hyped and promoted? Check. Brand new to the industry? Check. Sings other people's songs? Check. Viewed as the product of a really good producer giving her really good songs and being packaged for mainstream consumption? Check. You can maybe have one or two of those, but if you have all of them, there is no way you are going to win this award. No way.
And don't bother pointing out that it was a huge hit. That helps songs get nominated, but it does nothing for winning. A No. 1 song hasn't won since "Smooth." The biggest hit of the year has won three times in the past 20 years.
Next? "Paper Planes." Also has no shot. This song is a product mostly of great production, and while this award goes to producers, production doesn't win. The more obvious the production, the less the chance of a win, and this one is all about production.
"Chasing Pavements" has one chance -- Voters think that Adele is a force to be reckoned with and expect her to become a major player in the industry. This worked for Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones this decade. It's the only chance that a new artist has to win this category. It's possible for Adele, but it seems unlikely. If she loses SOTY, it's all over. My guess is that she will.
So really, there are only two legitimate options here: "Please Read the Letter" and "Viva La Vida." My gut says "Viva La Vida" because "Please Read the Letter" was such a nonstarter popularity-wise. You don't need to have a big hit to win this category, but unless you just died like Ray Charles you at least need a song people have heard. Save "Here We Go Again" there isn't a single past winner that had a lower profile than "Please Read the Letter." For that reason I don't think it will win.
I think Adele and M.I.A are pretty much out of it. Many don't even know who the hell they are and even if they listen to the songs they still won't vote for them.
Coldplay already won here so it seems like the safest bet, it's pretty popular, they have the rest of the General Field nominations....I'm gonna stick with them 'till the end.
I doubt Bleeding Love will win and Letter might upset.
2008 - Will win: Coldplay - "Viva La Vida" Should win: M.I.A. - "Paper Planes", Coldplay, or even Leona Lewis - "Bleeding Love" Spoiler: Robert Plant & Alison Kraus - "Please Read The Letter"
I would LOVE to see M.I.A. win, it would be deserving as well. BUT I know it will go to Coldplay or Plant/Krauss.
Will Win: Coldplay - "Viva La Vida" Should Win: Leona Lewis - "Bleeding Love"

The Grammys have had a pretty good track record here with few missteps (i.e. "Here We Go Again"). While I think the award should go to Adele for "Chasing Pavement," it will probably go to Coldplay for "Viva La Vida." "Bleeding Love" and "Paper Planes" don't stand a chance, and "Please Read the Letter" is too boring, and since neither of the artists is dead, it won't win wither.

"Viva La Vida" wins this one.
Excellent, excellent analysis. I completely agree with everything here.
Should win: Please Read the Letter Will Win: Viva La Vida Where the heck is: Mercy (!)
Grammy 2010: Album of the Year -- Whitney Houston - I Look to You Oscar 2010: Best Actress In a Leading Role -- Marion Cotillard - 9 Emmy 2010: Guest Actress in a Comedy Series -- Catherine O'Hara - Curb Your Enthusiasm
We can get rid of "Paper Planes" and "Chasing Pavements" here. "Bleeding Love," though deserving, won't win. Coldplay just won this category in 2003; so no need to reward them here so soon. They'll get their props in SOTY and other categories. Finally, we have Plant/Krauss as our winners. In fact, they'll win all 5 categories their nominated for. NARAS will feel completed by giving them both top prizes.
SHOULD WIN: Leona Lewis, "Bleeding Love" WILL WIN: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, "Please Read The Letter"
while i appreciate them going for something different, few of these feel like real singles of the year. that is sort of the pattern if you look at the winners though. the biggest singles of the decade have been left out in the cold of this category.
personally i'd love to see my girl m.i.a. take this but i dont see it happening.
