Nice! time for this.... I really doubt Choq Quib Town will be elegible, isn't the album from 2006? But perhaps it will be for Best New Artist since it seems to be a breakthrough during the elegible year, with their first album. Which makes them elegible for new artist, but not urban, I think. Like them a lot, not really crazy about Sidestepper to tell you the truth.

Bajofond. It will be interesting to see what single they choose to register, or both (but I doubt that). Is "EL MAREO" an official single? if it is, they'll probably go with that. But for now I'm still predicting "Pa Bailar" featuring Venegas, which is already Bajofondo's most played song. Both songs are awesome, I would be happy if any of the two got nominated.

So I finally bought DOS PAJAROS DE UN TIRO, and although I do like the songs by these two masters, the album production sucks big time, can't stand listening to it.

ORISHAS they got a new album, I know you love them, so do I. New single "BRUJA" is not that great, but they never dissapoint with their albums.

Can't wait for Julieta's MTV Unplugged, any unplugged from latinoamerica has been very successful. Well, except for the Brazilian ones, but that's because they have lost the essence of the unplugged, which is a privalege, and Brazil has like what, 10 unpluggeds each year?

Tommy Torres. WoW. Such a good album! I wasn't expecting it, I think he just kept the better songs for himself. "Por un beso" is awesome, and I think "PEGADITO" has lots of opportunities at song of the year.

Jorge Villamizar. I need to listen to this album now, loved Bacilos, but I find "Ninguna" to be really annoying. Hope it is no indication of the actual album.

I keep hearing buzz about Monte Negro for Best New Artist and Rock Song (Me Duele No Estar Junto A Ti). For best new artist my favorite has to be EL GUINCHO.

HUECCO. Another suprise! I didn't dig his first album, but this new one "Assalto" is delicious! you should really check it out. But I have no clue where to place him, perhaps on Male Pop or even Alternative.

Barbara Munoz. This is a girl from Chile, won some kind of reality show. This girl can sing, and if I was to choose between Chenoa, Yuridia and Barbara I would go with the last one. Her album is good and people in Mexico are really happy with her. Mario Domm, Jesse y Joy, Sin Bandera and lots of known faces on her record.

Rosario has a new album "Parte de mi" with songs from her influences.

Gloria Trevi. Yeah, this is like a guilty pleasure, but her album UNA ROSA BLU is surprisingly fun and basically the best album she has done. Never really liked her, but she shut my mouth with this one. I guess a lot has to do with producers Sergio George & Avila.

Los Cafres, pop or alternative? I think it is time for a Reggae/Ska category. Same thing with the new album by LOCOS POR JUANA.

ANA LAAN. Probably the most deserving female album of the year. At least for now that we have not heard Julieta's unplugged. I think they will place her on the Singer-Songwriter category. The album has a lot of english in it, but I'd say it is at least 60% in spanish so it should be good.

ALTERNATIVE

I think I'm gonna go crazy with this genre. It is so good, I think I can find at least 20 deserving albums. Listening to "Mucho" by Babasonicos makes me realize that the album isn't really alternative, perhaps they place it on pure rock.

I'll make a list of my favorites.

1. Atemahawke, Porter
2. Mar dulce, Bajofondo
3. Tijuana Sound Machine, Nortec Presents Bostich + Fussible
4. Alegranza!, El Guincho
5. Sino, Cafe Tacvba
6. La radiolina, Manu Chao
7. Animalitos, Hidrogenesse
8. Piñata, Instituto Mexicano del Sonido
9. Becker, Becker
10. Silverio, Silverio

From the Regional Mexican Categories, Vicente Fernandez has it all. "Para Siempre" has been his most successful record in many years, it has a shot at Album of the Year.

Producers. I'd say.
* Santaolalla + Campodonico for "Mar Dulce"
* Cachorro Lopez for "La Lengua Popular" and "Fantasia Pop"
* Tom Russo for "Assalto"
* Tweety Gonzalez for "Mediocre" & "Tan Real"
* Camilo Lara for "Piñata"

I have no clue what is going on with the Brazilian Music Industry, but we are talking about a downfall in both production and quality. Hopefully we'll see someone at the general categories, a new artist would be nice.

MUSIC VIDEO
"Promesas" by Los Mono is like almost a lock? I mean it became an internet sensation. I adore "Verano Fatal" by Nacho Vegas y Christina Rosenvinge. Also from Spain "La Revolucion Sexual" by La Casa Azul, "Uno Dos Tres" by Motel, "Disfraz de Tigre" by Hidrogenesse and "Coqueta" by Kinky.

Woooa... extended myself quite a bit, awesome.

We are always saying, BEST NEW ARTIST has to be the most important category, well perhaps after Album of the year. My mini-comments on those artists you have on your list.

INMIGRANTES. Huge chances, very deserving.
CHOC QUIB TOWN. If elegible, they get my support.
ESPERANZA. We'll see, but probably too much english on her album to make it elegible.
XIMENA SARIÑANA. Awesome songs, awesome production, Mexico's best newcomer.
CONCHITA. Looks like they love her in Spain, I got really bored listening to her vid.
TORREBLANCA. Awesome guy, but doesn't have an album out yet!
ARCANGEL. Not sure if he is elegible at all, I mean, his album continues to be "Unreleased" at least by a record company. But it has distribution on the web. Hopefully that's enough as "La maravilla" is indeed a masterpiece. Not sure if we can consider him a new artist, this is def. not his first album.
JAVIERA MENA. Mmmm she is awesome, but the album is from 2006. Could struggle to get in.
JERAU. Good tropipop, but not good enough.
NIGGA/FLEX. The album is ok, there are better options.
PLAYA LIMBO. Very popular in Mex, but their songs make me fall to sleep, in a bad way.
AMANDITITITA. I'm beginning to think she will show up somewhere, she's got unbelievable buzz in Mex, Los Angeles & New York.
EL GUINCHO. Make it happen, awesome guy right here.
KATAMARAN. Have not listen to their album, but singles are good.

ANDRES CUERVO, ELLA ES TAN CARGOSA, XIMENA GASTALDI, DON TETTO, & CARVHALO. Need time to research

I'm thinking...

01. Ximena Sarinana
02. Inmigrantes
03. Monte Negro
04. Kat DeLuna
05. El Guincho

NOw... who should... for now, I'm keeping Arcangel out. But if he is elegible, he would be on top.
01. El Guincho
02. Ximena Sarinana
03. Inmigrantes
04. Choq Quib Town
05. Becker

I'd add ELECTRICA MIAMI to the list.

Thanks to John Herbert and Kams for your recommendations on Brazilian music

Just one question for Kams

How good is the MTV Unplugged by SANDY & JUNIOR?

I ask this, because I have seen them as a group of inoffensive pop.

By the way, DIOGO NOGUEIRA is amazing. Is he completly new?

The MTV Unplugged was the last work recorded by Sandy & Junior as a duo and it is an amazing CD. I think it should be considered for the Latin Grammys.

Diogo Nogueira is an amazing singer indeed. He is completely new. He released his first album last year. Do you know he is the son of the great João Nogueira?

Here you have a link for this year spanish awards for the music..

I like Conchita, but i doubt that she will get enough support.

It is fun that "La Casa Azul" is known over there. Theey tried to take part in the "Eurovision Song Festival" this year but they lost against "El Baile del Chiki Chiki" by Rodolfo Chiquilicuatre.

To carlinhosbrown:

1. ChoQuibTown is elegible. At first, "Somos Pacífico" was launched in 2006, but it was re released in late 2007, with new tracks and new producer: Richard Blair. This week, ChocQuibTown released a new EP with four new songs (They are trying to be in the mind of voters on this time, I guess). The brand new single from this work is called "El Bombo", and you can hear it on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/chocquibtown

2. Sidestepper, the Colombian all star band, produced by Richard Blair too, already has 3 albums. "The Buena Vista Sound System" is already qualified as the album of the year in Colombia. On the disc participating musicians as: Latin Grammy winner, producer Iván Benavidez, Chucho Merchan, producer and bassist from Eurythmics, and: Andrea Echeverri from Aterciopelados, Goyo from ChocQuibTown, and Carlos Vives as a singers of the project. They will be in my final choice.

3. Aswell,Great list of music videos. For sure, "Promesas" by Los Monos is a lock into Best Short Music Video. and yes, you have all reason, this year the genre of Alternative Music can offer us a multiple options to choice. Maybe is the greatest field of the year.

4. About the new artists. We must await the end of the inscriptions to know the real contenders.

Ojodiamante,
First of all, your blog (www.clubfonograma.blogspot.com) is great.

Second, yeah, man! Diogo Nogueira is amazing. I can't describe his voice. It's unique. I suggest you his best song 'Espelho'. Listen to that.

And I don't agree with Kams. I think MTV Unplugged by Sandy & Junior is not good enough to get a nod in General Field. I even doubt if they will have support enough to grab a Best Duo or Group Album in Brazilian Field.

At this time, Maria Rita is the only brazilian singer who has real chances to sneak into the General Field. Not only Samba Meu received the public and the critical acclaim, but Maria has an edge over any other brazilian singer for being the only one ever to receive a Best New Artist award and she has been nominated for AOY for her first album 7 years ago.

By the way, when nominees will be unveiled?

Thanks for advance.

I think that if Ximena Sarinana is clasified for contender as best new artist , she will probably win. Not because she is an awesome singer or anything like that, but because of politics and I am predicting this with 95% certainty. The rationale for this asumption is:
Ximena belongs to Warner Music, same record label where one of the brothers of latin Grammy president is.We can argue back and forth whether this could happen or not. Politics play a "magic" and important role in " everything" and music, and particularly the latin grammys are not an exception.

You try to say that any artist from Warner music will be nominated for politics reasons.
Your post is so strange. New account, Just 1 post, and only to say that.

That especulations make me laugh. Last year, here, some people with a ghostly account, and only one post like you, said the same thing about JESSE & JOY, when they really deserved to be winners for Best New Artist

So, I invite everybody to not pay attention to this unfortunate and malicious comment.

No, definitely NO! I did not say "any artist", I said Ximena Sarinana, specifically!
Well, I think is a valid point I am making because "politics" plays magic in the music industry. Sorry if you Ojodiamante have any relation to Warner or the artist, but it is the truth, and you have to respect my opinion, therefore I invite everybody of the "free world"
to see and respond to my comment.
I do not know the issue about Jesse & Joy; I did not know who they were, but before I posted this comment I went ahead and did some investigation. There are comments which relates to Jesse & Joy been from Warner, and that their manager ?, is the brother of the president of the Latin Grammys. Well, when I read these comments I was not surprised at all to see that there is a relation and certainly is something that has to be looked at close. Well, lets see which artists are in the list-- nominated and maybe, only maybe, we will have the whole truth.

\ I like music and went ahead and listen to Jesse & Joy, and are OK but not meat for a Latin Grammy win. I went ahead and listen to the other contestants and there are a couple I like more.
Certainly, this is my first post, as there is always a first time. I like this blog, because the
it seems to me there are a lot of knowlegeable
music enthusiasts. Please don't be offended with the comments; we are adults and ready to take critique.

Agree with last comments. I think Strongtequila fall short of the percentage ...not 95 % that
Ximena will be the winner but I would say 100%.
It is all fixed! Doubt that other contestants
such as Barbara Munoz (Sony) or kany Garcia (Sony)will win. Remember from last year's Latin Grammy experience there is a strong "family tradition"... and NOBODY ... repeat nobody can change that.
My favorite for best new artist is a newly formed
Miami band "Guajiro".
