I just don't understand why artists feel the need to release albums every year. Are they under contract to do that?

It started out with Ashanti, then Rihanna and now Ne-Yo. I know there are a slew of artists that have done this. I would be here all day listing all of them.

When I found out Ne-Yo was releasing another album next month, I nearly puked. Do you think this helps or hurts an artists' career?

Yeah sometimes it will not only just burn out the artist but our interest in them. At with Rihanna she has been hlped otu with massive singles such as Umberella.

It's an interesting question, but this is definitely not a new thing. There are two particularly impressive records that come to mind.

The Beatles released 13 studio albums in the US in the 8 year period from 1963-1970.

Mariah Carey released an album almost every year for 13 years (1990: Mariah Carey, 1991: Emotions, 1992: MTV Unplugged, 1993: Music Box, 1994: Merry Christmas, 1995: Daydream, 1997: Butterfly, 1998: #1s, 1999: Rainbow, 2001: Gitter, 2002: Charmbracelet)

Well Jay-Z and Mariah were releasing albums every year in the 90's,so I dont see anything wrong with other artist doing it.

It depends on the artist.

We all know that it eventually caught up with Mariah Carey, and ultimately hurt her.

It's done nothing to Jay-Z besides enhance his career, and his superstar collaborations have only won him more Grammys (he's won Rap/Sung more than any other artist -- THREE times).

It did hurt Jennifer Lopez, but I think that was also a combination of her film career being just as successful as her music career and people just got sick of her.

I don't think that it hurt Ashanti. A combination of other factors hurt her career including: Irv Gotti's legal troubles, the breakthrough of Beyonce, and the 50 Cent v. Ja Rule beef.

It hasn't hurt Rihanna just yet, but I can see people complaining of overexposure very soon.

It hasn't and I don't think it will hurt Ne-Yo. He doesn't tend to over-promote his albums. He releases hit singles from each of them, he usually hits platinum status, nabs a few Grammy nods, and then he's on to the next album. He just seems to kind of fit into whatever year he's releasing an album in and becomes successful without overexposing himself.

I agree. It really does depend on the artist.

People just got sick of Mariah and J.Lo so it caught up to them.

Jay-Z can release whatever he wants and it's usually accepted by the public and the critics.

It didnt affect Ashanti,Rihanna,or Ne-Yo.For Ashanti she just got caught up in some problems with Irv Gotti's trial and the whole Ja Rule/50 Cent crap.Rihanna has done very well for herself.
She had 2 #1 hits off her last 2 albums so I dont think people are tired of her just yet.Same with Ne-Yo.He releases a few hits, gets a few nominations, writes for other artists and he's usually done.None of these 3 artists are overexposed either,IMO.Especially Ashanti she waited 4 years between her last album and this new album,so that's more than enough time for people to miss her so she wont get overexposed.

Did people really get sick of Mariah Carey? I just think her music became somewhat mediocre and stagnant during her commericial slump.

It didn't hurt Ashanti. Get real!

Ashanti released an album every year from 2002-2004. Major exposure. She was always on radio and televison. Her sales dropped with each album. Needless to say, she can't even get another top 10 single, her album will probably flop and people have totally forgotten about her. So I think it did hurt Ashanti.

I was just saying that I don't think Ashanti was hurt by it. If she was, then I think it was less of that and more of other issues dealing with some of her professional co-workers (Irv Gotti, Ja Rule).

Yeah her album sales went down, but people have not forgotten about her."The Way That I Love You is #2 on the R+B 100 so how is that a flop? Her album wont flop, she is doing pretty good right now.She might not sell as much as her other albums but it will be far from a flop.

Don't worry everyone, Co2006 swooped in to defend his girlfriend.

Actually, I don't particularly mind when artists release a lot of albums in a short amount of time. In today's ever-fickel marketplace, best to strike while the iron is hot. I don't think Ne-Yo, or especially Rihanna would be where they are if they didn't constantly release new music.

Hey, I'd much rather that then constantly re-releasing something. At least this way it's new material.

That's right Classof2006 is here to defend Ashanti and if anyone doesnt like it they will end up like her boyfriend did in "The Way That I Love You video"!LOL roflmao

I agree with you.Re-releases seem to be the trend these days and many times that is way more pointless to do them releasing an album every year.

If your music is generic (Ne-Yo) or you don't write your music at all (Rihanna), it's easy to release music every single year. For Rihanna, all she has to do is pick from the plethora of music people are throwing her way and then do the vocals. How hard is that? She can release an album every year. On the other hand, if the artist is involved in creating the songs, they have to 1. seek/get inspiration, 2. write the music, and 3. record it -- so it's a longer process.

I don't mind frequent albums. You'd never hear me complaining about constant new material from my favorites.

Classof2006, I know Ashanti is your girl and all, but let's keep it real. Do you really think "The Way That I Love You" will crack the top 10 on the POP charts? That's the chart I was referring to. In six months, we'll see if the new album is a flop or not.

Honestly yeah I think it will crack the Top 10.She is already #37 and she seems to keep going higher and higher.I know her song didnt skyrocket to the top like Usher and Mariah's, but wouldnt you rather a song climb the charts slowly and become a hit as opposed to quickly going to the top and lose momentum?Which is what is happening to Mariah's song.I see your point about Ashanti's album sales decreasing but I think this time she will sell better than her last album. She may not sell 3 or 4 million like her first album but I expect "The Declaration" to at least go platinum.

I dont see "The way that i love you" in the top 10 but it can happen. I do see top 20 which isnt that bad. The song will reach #1 on the hip hop/R&B 100.

Back to the topic i think it depends on the artist. Some can get away with it and some cant.

I think it takes a "real artist" of a musician to make it work. For someone like Jay-Z, who is writing and producing so much of his own output, it makes sense, because he constantly has something new to offer.
