Not much time, so just a quick resumée:

Keisha was really good but I would never consider giving her an Oscar.

Diane's nominations was a joke (for me, at least).

Samantha was a welcome surprise, but not a chance here!

Naomi Watts is a performance that divides a lot of people. For me, it's...somehow too much

But in the end, they all don't matter because Charlize Theron "gave one of the best performances of all time! OF ALL TIME!"

Question:
Who deserved the Oscar?

Choices:
Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider
Diane Keaton - Something's Gotta Give
Samantha Morton - In America
Charlize Theron - Monster
Naomi Watts - 21 Grams

I used to love Naomi and picks her as my personal winner. But as time goes by, I can't resist Charlize's raw, honest performance in Monster. She gets my vote.

1. Charlize Theron
2. Naomi Watts

3. Diane Keaton

4. Keisha Castle Hughes

5. Samantha Morton [should have gone to Jennifer Connelly or Uma Thurman]

I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I would vote for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill2.. Charlize Theron. This performance gets better and better after the last few viewings of the film (As does the film itself).

Theron
Watts
Keaton
Morton
Castle Hughes

Charlize Theron, "Monster"

It was exciting to see Charlize Theron reach this level in her craft after all of the thankless girlfriend/wife roles that she had prior to this. Devastating performance, and if you watch the Nick Broomfield doc on Aileen Wuornos, you'll see just how much she nailed this role and even underplayed the crazy at times. In another year, I'd pick Naomi Watts instead. Loved her in "21 Grams." Diane Keaton carried "Something's Gotta Give" very well, and her chemistry with Jack Nicholson was through the roof. I remember being pleased at the time that someone her age could land a role like this and show what a comedy goddess she is still. Samantha Morton's nod was a surprise. I love that she was remembered for this role. Paddy Considine matched her from start to finish. He should have been nominated that year too. I'll always remember the hysteria over Keisha Castle-Hughes here during those days. Nomination day was insane, and the Academy making history like that was thrilling. But compared to the rest of the lineup, she's fifth for me.

Rankings:

1. Charlize Theron, "Monster"
2. Naomi Watts, "21 Grams"
3. Diane Keaton, "Something's Gotta Give"
4. Samantha Morton, "In America"
5. Keisha Castle-Hughes, "Whale Rider"

Kind of a boring, uninteresting year. I really, really like Diane Keaton in "Something's Gotta Give" but I won't vote against Charlize Theron's monstorous performance in "Monster."

I like this line-up. Maybe not the most towering performances of all time, but all are good at what they're doing in their films. Keaton excels at comedy, Hughes gives a natural thoroughly alive performance, Morton is grounded and evokes compassion (though I wonder if she was really a lead, I felt like the girls in her film had more screentime), Watts shows what it is like to be shattered in ways that reverberate with the audience, and Theron is scary, crazy, and understandable.

If she hadn't won the year before I could have seen Kidman in this line-up, likely for "Cold Mountain", though I would have liked to see her here for Dogville, which was such an interesting experiment that she helped to pull off. Kidman may not be the best actress, but she is willing to take risk and work at her craft.

Theron wins here, but I would have been fine with a Watts win.

The nominees aren't fantastic, but this year has one of the strongest slates of contenders from this decade

My personal ballot:
1. Oksana Akinshina - Lilya 4-Ever
2. Angela Bettis - May
3. Charlize Theron - Monster
4. Uma Thurman - Kill Bill: Vol. 1
5. Carolina Lizarazo - The First Night

1) Naomi Watts- more natural than Charlize Theron so she gets my vote
2) Charlize Theron

3) Keisha Castle Hughes

4) Diane Keaton

5) Samantha Morton- Just do not get this nomination at all.

Scarlett Johanssen would have been my top choice as best actress for 2003 in "Lost in Translation". Also, would have preferred Evan Rachel Wood ("Thirteen") or Jennifer Connelly ("House of Sand and Fog") made the line-up over Keaton or Morton.

Another one of those rare years where the other four women just didn't need to bother showing up in light of a performance that can legitimately be called one of the greatest of all time.

Charlize Theron in "Monster." Every single scene cements the validity for an Oscar win.

Last is Diane Keaton. She can be a very good actress and it was nice for a comedic performance to be recognized but this one just didn't do much for me.

Fourth is Keisha Castle-Hughes. I was happy for her at the time for breaking the age bracket record and the fact that the Academy correctly placed her, but in the end, she wasn't amazing, but still good.

Third is Samantha Morton. She could be considered Supporting but she was placed correctly IMO. It has been a VERY long time since I have seen "In America" but I remember her being pretty good in it.

Second is Naomi Watts. She should have an Oscar for "Mulholland Dr.", simply put and this performance was worthy of an Oscar as well, but....

Charlize Theron takes the cake in a classic performance that will be remembered for years to come.

Snubs would have to be Scarlett Johannsen for any of her films (preferrably "Lost in Translation); Evan Rachel Wood, "Thirteen"; Uma Thurman, "Kill Bill Vol.1"; and Jennifer Connelly, "House of Sand and Fog".

I would leave Theron and Watts and then place in Johannsen, Wood, and Connelly for the final three slots.

So, my vote is for CHARLIZE THERON.
