I saw the new production of "Mary Stuart" tonight, which began in London's Donmar and transferred to the West End and subsequently to Broadway with its two leads, Harriet Walter (as Elizabeth I) and Janet McTeer (as Mary Stuart) intact.

It is one hell of a show. Will be a big Tony player for sure.

I think McTeer is winning her second Tony award for this, but Walter will certainly be nominated as well. I have seen no actress attack a role with such savage, delicious intensity as does McTeer, and it pays off generously. Walter actually has more stage time, and is McTeer's equal in a different sort of way, given the less-flashy but still dynamic role.

I'd also expect nominations for Director Phyllida Lloyd (of Mamma Mia!, absurdly - this couldn't be more different) Revival of a Play, Lighting Design perhaps, and maybe even one of the men in Featured Actor (John Benjamin Hickey as Leicester, probably).

Yesterday, I finally saw this, and had I been a Tony voter, Janet McTeer would have gotten my vote, hands down, although it would have been hard to pass up Harriet Walker's name on the ballot as well. (God of Carnage's Marcia Gay Harden was great, but McTeer's work is in another league.) Just an amazing performance in a truly inspired production.
