'Liberace' heading to Broadway
Wayland Pickard stars in 'The Man, The Music'
By GORDON COX

Actor Wayland Pickard, who’s played Liberace onstage before, will star in the show.

The ghost of Liberace hopes to set up a candelabrum on Broadway next season, with "Liberace: The Man, the Music and the Memories" aiming for a Rialto run in the fall.
Show, starring Wayland Pickard as the flamboyant ivory-tickler, is gearing up for Gotham under the auspices of producers Edmund Gaynes and Nancy Bianconi.

"Liberace" re-creates a Vegas showroom performance by the late entertainer. Pickard, in heavy makeup that boosts his resemblance to the musician, performed a similar show under a different title in L.A. in 2006 and played another Southern California stint earlier this year.

Pickard appears in the show with a handful of supporting thesps.

Pamela Hall, whose Off Broadway credits include the upcoming "Danny and Sylvia: The Danny Kaye Musical," will helm the show.

"Liberace" is produced with the approval and cooperation of the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts.

No Broadway dates or theater have yet been set.

Gaynes and Bianconi have previously teamed on Off Broadway outings including "The Big Voice: God or Merman?" (2006) and "Picon Pie" (2005).

Is this a musical or a play with music?

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Liberace Musical Keying Up for Broadway
By Dave Itzkoff

Associated Press

The man who could play the “Minute Waltz” in 37 seconds: LiberaceIs a lit candelabrum atop a grand piano still compliant with New York fire prevention and building codes? Someone had better find out, as a musical about Liberace, the pianist and entertainer who put the flame in flamboyant, is planned for Broadway this fall. In a news release, the producers Edmund Gaynes and Nancy Bianconi announced their plans for a new show, called “Liberace: The Man, The Music & The Memories,” which they said would recreate the experience of a Liberace concert in a Las Vegas show room. The musician and comedian Wayland Pickard has been cast as Liberace and Pamela Hall (Off Broadway’s “Danny and Sylvia: The Danny Kaye Musical”) will direct. A theater and starting date have not been announced.
