The OCC nods often bear no resemblance to the Tony nominations, so, bear that in mind...
The lack of eligibility for "Next to Normal" and "Dividing the Estate" (both played Off-Broadway last season) is something else to keep in mind. Both will receive multiple Tony nominations and are leading contenders for Best Musical/Play.
"The Seagull" getting blanked is sort of shocking and won't happen at the Tonys. The mild reception for "9 to 5" (3 nods) is, sadly to say, sort of on par with the early preview buzz for the show. "Waiting for Godot" did extremely well - yet another big entrant in Revival of a Play.

Also, with Alice Ripley and the cast of Dividing the Estate ineligible, plus the special awards for the Billy Elliot boys and the cast of The Norman Conquests, they have removed a number of the top Tony contenders from competition in these acting categories.

I was surprised at the lack of love for 9 to 5 in the musical & score & lead actress categories. Surprised A Tale of Two Cities made it in. Wasn't it a critically reviled flop?
On the positive, glad to see 2 noms for Rock of Ages. I went to see it when I went to NYC. It was dumb goofy fun and everyone there had a blast!

These noms are shocking! (And not in a good way.) I guess some of the omissions make sense, but I hope the Tonys in no way resemble these. I am really shocked that The Seagull and Equus weren't better represented. And the lukewarm response to 9 to 5 has me a little worried since I have tickets for it next month. So Title of Show was already eligible in a previous year? That's the only explanation that makes sense; otherwise, they got royally shafted!
I'm sure 9 to 5 will still be playing. I hope so at least. I want to take the train back up to NYC and go see it. I LOVE the movie. Let me know how it is :-)

I think "9 to 5" is certainly a better bet than "Tale of Two Cities" for a Best Musical Tony nod, but word is the show is pretty disappointing and won't be competitive to actually win anything.
I think "Equus" might suffer a Tony shutout - wouldn't happen in any other year, but there has just been one superb play revival after another this season. "Equus" was good but not good enough.
"33 Variations" is weirdly over-represented here. I think Jane Fonda is likely for a Tony nod but that may be all it gets there.
No rulings on "West Side Story" yet. All other Marias have been Featured of course, but that means nothing.

Updated with winners. Because of the incongruity in eligiblity in a lot of these races in terms of the Tonys, there isn't a lot to compare...but I did find it mildly surprising that Marcia Gay Harden bested both of the Mary Stuart ladies for Actress in a Play.
