Okay, I know the Tonys just aired tonight, but I thought I'd set this discussion up right here and now. 1. Is anyone feeling post-Tony melancholy? I sure am! Doesn't help that I just got back from a Memorial weekend NYC theatre trip. I so wished I lived closer so I could take advantage of all the great theatre there.
2. Anyone heard anything about the musical version of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City"? A while back I heard it was in development and targeted for an opening date sometime during the 2009-2010 season. But I haven't heard anything since then. And I notice it's not even on Playbill.com's list of impending Broadway shows. I'd love to know what the scoop on this is.
Bye, Bye, Birdie Performances begin September 10, 2009
Starring John Stamos as Albert Peterson, Gina Gershon as Rosie, Nolan Gerard Funk as Conard Birdie, Jayne Houdyshell as Mae Petersen, Bill Irwin as Mc. MacAfee, and.... MATT DOYLE AS HUGO PEABODY!
I'm not a big fan of the show but I love Matt Doyle (the final Hanschen in SA). Can't wait!
Young Restless One - I experience post-Tony letdown every year. There's such a rush to see everything before the Tonys and then there's a big lull until the new season gets underway in the fall.
In terms of what we know now of 09-10, I'm most looking forward to Tracy Lett's SUPERIOR DONUTS, Sarah Ruhl's Bway premiere IN THE NEXT ROOM OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY, and the revival of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
The strangest and latest addition to the supposed lineup for next season is another revival of La Cage aux Folles, transferring from an acclaimed run in the West End. Or, so says producer Sonia Friedman, whose Norman Conquests won a Tony last night: http://www.playbill.com/news/a...l_Will_Play_Broadway
It's been, of course, 4 long and lonely years since we last were honored with La Cage revival.

Has John Stamos just started working on Broadway with Norman Conquests or has this been an ongoing thing with him for the past few years that I haven't noticed? Glad he's still working, but I didn't take him for a Broadway type.
Bill Irwin and Matt Doyle? I'd sit through Bye Bye Birdie for a cast like that.

Wow. In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play looks extremely racy. I'm amazed that so much sexual humor would be allowed in one Broadway sitting. After all, the whole thing is about.... umm.... pleasuring people.
Superior Donuts looks interesting. I thought that "donut" was going to be a metaphor for something. I didn't expect the play to be about an actual donut shop.

John Stamos has performed on Broadway in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", "Cabaret" and "Nine".
Superior Donuts looks like it's going to be very interesting...

I really am still on the fence about it. I do wish I had seen it here in Chicago previews when I had the chance.

I knew there was talk of a revival of Fosse's Dancin' going to Broadway. It was going to be produced by Roundabout Theatre Company and performed at Studio 54. It was supposed to open in the 2008-2009 season, but got pushed back to the 2009-2010 season. Don't know if it's still on though.
Has John Stamos just started working on Broadway with Norman Conquests or has this been an ongoing thing with him for the past few years that I haven't noticed? Glad he's still working, but I didn't take him for a Broadway type.
John Stamos has performed on Broadway in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", "Cabaret" and "Nine".
I saw him in Cabaret and was tremendously impressed. I have seen several Tony-winners in the their winning roles, and his performance of as the Emcee ranked right up there.

Alan Cumming was the original Emcee in the revival of Cabaret and won the Tony...Stamos has never won a Tony...
He is, however, a solid Broadway performer. He was also sharp in "How to Succeed...".
(and he's not in the Norman Conquests...)

I can't wait for the revival of A Little Night Music--to be produced by Trevor Nunn! _______________________________________ "The voyage to discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes"-- Marcel Proust New York City Luxury Hotel Manager, New York City Hotels

Yes. I know that and assume that everyone here would know that.
As I said, I saw John Stamos play the Emcee later in the run, and his performance ranks up there with several Tony winners I have seen.

Yikes. Simmer down. It's not that unreasonable to read your statement the way I did.

Posted all four shows that are confirmed for Spring 2010 thus far. We'll see if anything else officially joins them. I'll also stick in a big list of shows that are in-the-works.... let me just say, some of them sound pretty freakin' stupid.

Originally posted by flaming tail: I don't know which is worse, a revival of "Bye Bye Birdie" or the fact that "Spiderman" is now a musical.
I have a feeling Spidey is going to be another "Young Frankenstein" in every sense.
Except for that Julie Taymor is a great director who KNOWS theater, and Bono and the Edge are legitimate songwriters, as opposed to Susan Stroman and Mel Brooks, who melds sounds and hopes they work out, a team that got lucky once and probably won't see half the success the Producers received ever again.
While this certainly doesn't mean Spider-man will be amazing or even good, it sure does have a lot of potential, moreso, Id say, than Young Frankenstein did.
Bye Bye Birdie on the other hand.... unnecessary. And I would give my first born to Matt Doyle, too.
