I mean seriously, the best they can do is open the show with "Circle of Life"?
Yawn. We've saw that number performed on the Tonys in 1998. I know there's going to be a lack of popular, commercial musicals performing this year, but seriously, why do we need to see "The Lion King" again?
The best opening numbers in recent years were when Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, and Jennifer Holliday joined Rosie O'Donnell in the opening number of the 1998 telecast and Hugh Jackman sang "One Night Only" with the Rockettes and the casts of all the nominated musicals in 2004. Those were openers.
But a played-out number from a show that's been running for 10 years on Broadway that almost everyone in North America who goes to the theater has already seen?
Yawn.
