Now I know that there are still a few possible contenders that haven't opened yet, but it is less that 2 months away until the nominations are announced on Tuesday, May 5th. So I thought we should go a head and start predicting. So come on one and all and try to predict who will be nominated at the 63rd Annual Tony Awards!

For Your Grammy Consideration:
Kristin Chenoweth - in all eligible categories

With the sensational (and deserved) reviews for "Hair" last night, I think it's safe to say it's the clear frontrunner for Revival of a Musical.

It also sets up a

Best Director of a Musical smackdown!

Stephen Daldry vs. Diane Paulus

Hey R2684! Can you please post some of the reviews for "Hair"? I have tickets for May, and I'm dying to know what the critics are saying. I can't access anything here at work. I work for the government, and they block EVERYTHING!

I won't clog up this thread with reviews but will start a new one just for Hair.

The only categories with 5 nominees are the acting categories. All others have only 4.

I don't know about EmmyLover, but I already knew that. I just always have that extra slot to make up for... well... me being wrong.

Quite a rave today in the NEW YORK TIMES for the revival of August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come and Gone". Could be competition for best revival with "The Seagull" if people actually bother to see it. Bartlett Sher could also be highly competitive for best director.

With this flock of rave-reviewed revivals streaming in, I'm starting to get more than a little nervous for "The Seagull"...

It certainly helps that "Joe Turner..." is still running.

Solid-looking predictions. But the buzz on "Waiting for Godot" is very good. I don't think it'll get overlooked.

Anyone else get the feeling that [title of show] will get a lot more Tony love than is being predicted? With the lukewarm buzz about 9 to 5, I wouldn't at all be surprised if TOS snags a (well deserved, IMHO) nom for Best Musical while 9 to 5 is overlooked.

Anyone else think this could happen? Didn't the cast of TOS also get rave reviews? I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the four gets nommed.

I didn't mean to totally neglect "Waiting for Godot," but Play Revival is so PACKED this year that it seems like several quality shows are going to get shafted. It may literally come down to the last four entrants of the season, though I'm not looking for "The Philanthropist" to make too big a dent in the proceedings.

I wouldn't count [tos] out of the Best Musical race at all. For sure Billy Elliot and Next to Normal are in. It could certainly turn out that of the remaining contenders ([tos], 9 to 5, Shrek, Rock of Ages), [tos] has the most support.

"Godot", though a fine production it may be, could be at a disadvantage for a nod because it's a less accessible play (I'm starting to feel the same thing about "Exit the King") and there are quite a few juicy crowd-pleasers to contend with.

I definitely think it's likely that all the Directing-Play nominees are from revivals.

From what I've heard, "The Philanthropist" is as lifeless as most Roundabout productions lately.

I think if voters choose GOD OF CARNAGE over DIVIDING THE ESTATE, they're more likely to honor Hallie Foote as best featured actress in a play, in honor of both her and her late father, than throw another Tony Angela Lansbury's way.

I'm not convinced voters will choose "God of Carnage" over "Dividing the Estate". While I enjoyed "Carnage" very much, for me "Estate" was pretty obviously the better play. "Carnage" is of course a star-laden, box office hit so its getting a lot of coverage.

I'm not sure how much should be made of the fact that "Carnage" is currently playing while "Estate" has closed, either. This is often to said to be a big advantage but it's really not. Time and again voters have shown their memories are just fine (recent examples: 2004 Revival of a Play to Henry IV over Raisin in the Sun - also by far the bigger commercial hit; Michelle Pawk winning Featured Actress in a Play for the closed and ignored "Hollywood Arms" over Linda Emond in "Life x 3").

Plus - let's face it - another Tony for Yasmina Reza when Horton Foote has none?

I also think this is going to be not such an easy victory for Angela Lansbury. She absolutely could do it, and New York is thrilled to see her back and working in the theater again - but she does have four Tonys at home. And for me the comedic performance of the season was given by Hallie Foote.

What do you think of the odds of "The Seagull" making it into the best revival race at this point? It got great reviews but then this new bunch of late-arriving revivals all are getting great reviews. I kept it out of my line-up but being closed is really the only reason for it.

I had similar concerns in choosing "God of Carnage" over "Dividing the Estate" but all the thoughts you expressed had occurred to me. I will probably go back and forth between them several times before choosing one over the other.
