Can we please STOP with the musicals based on films of the same name? Good Lord! Between those and the revivals, is there anything wholly original on this list?
I am dismayed about the future of Broadway. Where are the original works? I love to go to NYC when I can - usually yearly - to see several shows, but I can honestly say there's nothing on this list to entice me to make the trip in 2010.
That's exactly what I thought when I first looked over the list. It is filled to the brim with movie-to-musicals. Even Once, which was a musical movie to begin with, could get redundant, though I still think its heartfelt lyrics will be just as compelling on the Great White Way.
I got to the point where, when I saw White Noise on the list, I was expecting to see that they were bringing the Michael Keaton horror film to Broadway. However, this Noise looks like it could be quite interesting, particularly because it has additional songs written by the up-and-coming duo Pasek & Paul, who, if you haven't heard their work, are all over YouTube right now. After meeting in college, they wrote Edges, which is a song cycle of sorts (in other words, a musical without any book). This should be, I believe, the first official musical that they are contributing to.
(However, they started writing a Peter Pan musical that was simply breath-taking. Why they cancelled it, I'm don't know. Gavin Creel is on YouTube, singing "Do You Remember" from their Peter Pan cancellation. When I have a chance, I'll post a link. It's a gorgeous number.)

Just to see how many of these in-the-works were original, film-based or other types of adaptations, here the musicals are seperated.
ORIGINALS Big Time Merry-Go-Round Minsky's Untitled Mandela/Apartheid Musical White Noise
REVIVALS Brigadoon Dancin' Godspell A Little Night Music The Wiz
MOVIE-TO-MUSICALS Catch Me If You Can Dirty Dancing Father of the Bride Leap of Faith Nutty Professor Once Pure Country
ADAPTATIONS Angels Betty Boop Bruce Lee: Journey to the West Houdini Nice Work If You Can Get It Robin and the 7 Hoods Russian on the Side
So the list of Originals isn't as short as I thought it would be. But still, the movie-to-musicals and adaptations are overwhelming in comparison.
The one I'm most interested in... Angels. I'm really curious about how "Paradise Lost" could work as a musical. I'm not saying it's gunna be any good, but I do think it would be interesting to see.

Originally posted by Royal Night: Kristin Chenoweth has compared her voice to Betty Boop's in the past, maybe she should consider starring in that. It could have potential.
There isn't really a linear plot with Betty Boop as is. The storyline would have to be invented by those involved... which translates to the concept that no matter how much speculation we do about the musical's story, we have no friggin' clue.
Chenoweth as Betty Boop? The only idea I've heard so far, so there you have it.
Question: Since Brigadoon is having a new book written for it, could it become eligible once again for Best Book at the Tonys? Would the committee have to decide that? Before you push the idea aside, remember that Little Mermaid was qualified for Best Score despite more than half the songs being un-original to the stage production. That's how the committee sometimes works.

Also the Once musical could be very interesting! But I'm wondering how the Untitled Mandela/Apartheid Musical would work...

That's such a weird thought. I don't know if I like it or not.

That one actually could be very intimate. I imagine that, like the film, one of the first images is the male lead standing center-stage, singing a song faced out to the audience.

Well, there's this apartheid... and it's got music....
