You know, I was actually about to post something about this. The fact that it wasn't even nominated is absolutely ridiculous. The rotating stage, particularly during the Travel scene, is incredibly well-done. The fact that its not nominated is a huge snub, in my opinion.
The costumes, on the other hand, are going for the Tony gold.

I was also surprised by Shrek's Set Design snub. The nominating committee was relatively pro-Shrek, so its omission is pretty confusing.
LOL, some are saying that Obama's trip to see Joe Turner's Come and Gone may influence voters and help it win Revival. I don't really buy that. If anything, it'll help Roger Robinson who already seems to be very slightly ahead.
Time Out NY released their predictions. They don't take any huge gambles.
Best Musical - Billy Elliot Best Play - God of Carnage Best Revival of a Musical - Hair Best Revival of a Play - The Norman Conquests Best Director of a Musical - Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot (says it's competitive between him and Paulus) Best Director of a Play - Matthew Warchus, The Norman Conquests Best Actor in a Musical - Billy Elliots (mentions voters' disapproval of the joint nomination/no obvious alternate) Best Actress in a Musical - Alice Ripley, Next to Normal (landslide) Best Actor in a Play - Geoffrey Rush, Exit the King (landslide) Best Actress in a Play - Marica Gay Harden, God of Carnage (adds that neither Jane Fonda nor Janet McTeer can be counted out) Best Featured Actor in a Musical - Gregory Jbara, Billy Elliot (says it's tight between him and Swenson) Best Featured Actress in a Musical - Karen Olivo, West Side Story Best Featured Actor in a Play - Roger Robinson, Joe Turner's Come and Gone (mild frontrunner) Best Featured Actress in a Play - Angela Lansbury, Blithe Spirit (landslide) Best Book - Billy Elliot (close) Best Score - Billy Elliot (50/50 coin toss)
I didn't find the set for Shrek particularly impressive. It was big, for sure, but not very distinctive or imaginitive. Like most of Shrek, I found it disappointing.
Updated my predictions with a few new categories. Nothing changed from the old ones. Still a few I'm not ready to call, including Best Musical, Book and Score, Best Actress in a Play and a lot of the weirdly competitive design categories.

I agree with a lot of your Shoulds there True Tenor but am totally baffled at how anybody could think the current "West Side Story" is better than "Hair".
"Hair" is the best musical - new or revived - of the season, and right up there with "South Pacific" as the best musical currently running on Broadway.

Rush is onstage every single second of King, and is one of the finest British character actors, at least in the film world. He's got the movie star aura, and the critic prizes to boot. He does, however, have his detractors, who claim his performance is more than a little over-the-top.
I haven't heard anybody call Rush's performance over-the-top. It's an Ionesco play. It's not realism. It's pitch-perfect for the style. Absurdism may not be everyone's taste but it's not Rush's fault...in fact even people I've talked to who don't like the play at all think Rush is tremendous.

The real suspense is between Norman Conquests and Joe Turner's Come & Gone. I wonder how many people actually saw all three nights of NC, and JTC&G has got a good shot of taking this.

For me, this came down more to the show itself, and I am not a fan of Hair. It's a preference thing. I don't think it's that great of a show, and I don't think this new production was as daring as it could have been. West Side at least tried some new things, and it's female cast is extraordinary.

AGREED about Aaron Tveit!!!!!! Travesty. He should get a Tony simply for being so gorgeous.
although i have a feeling that goc is going to win, i'd love to see 'reasons to be pretty' score the tony. it really is the first labute play where a male character self-sacrifices. and thomas sadowski carries the arc of the character in a strong sweeping way.

Tony voters recieved tickets to the Saturday trilogy marathon. I'm sure the vast majority went to all three. I agree it'll be close but I still expect Norman to pull it out.

Though I'd have voted for Dividing the Estate, I think reasons to be pretty is every bit God of Carnage's equal -- probably even its superior, despite my general aloofness towards Neil Labute in general. COMPLETELY agree about Thomas Sadoski; of all this year's nominees he is maybe the most unappreciated. He completely carries the play.
