I agree with most of the things Tom Cruise knows. AND, I am NO Scientologist. I also dont think it's any big deal that he jumped on Oprah's couch. Big Freaking Deal people. And NO. I am not his fangirl. Also, I LIKE Tom Hanks and think he was terrific in Gump.

Mary Lou Retton is not a great American gymnast. Yes she has five medals but she did not win hers at a fully contested games. In my view Nastia Lukin and Shannon Miller stand above her.

Does anyone think that Mary Lou Retton was that great of a gymnast though? I thought it was pretty much established that if the Olympics hadn't been boycotted that she never would have won a gold medal in the first place. I certainly never hear her name being mentioned with women gymnasts like Nadia Comenci or Olga Korbut.
Sadly I'm old enough to remember her winning, and I thought it was more of her personality and cuteness that helped her get so many projects later on unlike other multi-medalists who achieved more than her but disappeared almost as soon as the Olympics they won in were over. She was way cuter than Kerri Strug who won America's hearts in Atlanta by doing her routine even though she was hurt, but let's face it, I think her not being as cute as Retton was combined with that dolphin voice hurt her as having as much longevity as Retton did in the public consciousness.
Also, while I don't think Retton would have won her medals had the Olympics not been boycotted, back then it was great to finally see the stranglehold of Eastern European countries broken. Although, I guess if we had just waited long enough we would have won fair and square eventually, not to take credit away from Retton's win inspiring many girls to do gymnastics. Further, we were still in the Cold War at the time, and seeing her in her iconic red, white, and blue outfit winning in a sport that the Evil Empire usually won (never mind why they didn't win that year) just evoked this patriotism associated with her that other American Olympians have a hard time capturing.
Although I think Phelps may capture that same lightning in a bottle it since America will lose the gold medal count to China most likely, but we can point to Phelps as being a way of saying, "nyah, nyah. Your country might take away kids from their parents at the age of four or five to win all your gold medals, but the person with the most gold medals of all time comes from the USA. Suck on that China with your clearly underage gymnasts."
