The best thing about the Globes from what it looks like is Slumdog, Rourke and Ledger winning.

The Gloden Globe awards were moved to Monday's for a while so as not to go head to head with Desperate Housewives. So this is not the first time the broadcast has lost to an hour of Desperate Housewives. In fact the GG probably did better against DH this year then back in 2005, as ratings are down for all types of programming including Desperate Housewives. Here's the item from Variety about the temporary move of the Globes to Monday.

HOLLYWOOD -- The Golden Globes are relocating to Monday--but for how long remains unclear.

As expected, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. announced Thursday that the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC Monday, Jan. 16, instead of its customary Sunday night slot (Daily Variety, July 29). Pea**** pushed for the change because it didn't want to see the kudocast once again get slaughtered by strong competish like "Desperate Housewives" and NFL playoff coverage.

Slumdog and Ledger were likely winning anyway. The GGs will have no impact on that. The reception of and speech by Rourke will have some impact, not his win by itself.

god, seanflynn you are such a globe hater. don't let that fool you: globes are important because of the visibility their winners get when they win, not the award itself. the fact that winslet was so overwhelmingly grateful and won in both categories will have a lot of impact on her chances, as will mickey rourke's win/reception. they ARE a good indicator, and saying that they're not anymore is just bs

Vozas - where did I write anything that contradicts what you just said? I said specifically Rourke's win DOES matter - not because the GG voted for him specifically, but because it gave him and the response to him exposure, which as I said IS important.

The GGs on the other hand will have zero impact on SM and Ledger winning, which was pretty clear a month ago anyway.

I am curious as to why some posters on here have commented that Anne Hathaway's loss in the Best Actress race last night has ruined any chance for her to win an Oscar.

Why would in hurt her Oscar chances given the fact that 80 members of the HFPA did not honor her last night? For all any of us know, Anne could have come in second. We will never know.

I think Kate Winslet is an amazing actress and is so deserving to be both a Golden Globe and Oscar winner. She was radiant last night. I do take exception to the fact that she said, "I'm sorry Meryl and Kristen. And who's the other one? Angelina." No mention of Anne Hathaway, who IMHO, was the front runner in this category. When you start mentioning names and leave someone out, it looks bad.

I am still hoping for Anne to win the SAG and Oscar. Her performance in "Rachel Getting Married" was fantastic. If you haven't seen her in it, I highly recommend it.

Any of whomever are the five finalists for best actress could end up being the winner. The key issue is we don't know what shape the Winslet nomination(s) will take. Any speculation on who will win is premature until then. We aren't even 100% certain that Hathaway or Winslet will be nominated for lead yet, though both are quite likely.

That is the first thing I thought too("have I been a hater to anyone?"). The only person I can think of quite possibly not being too fond of me because of the things i've said should she read the boards could be Patricia Arquette. lol Other than her I don't think I am too negative to people...again at least that I can recall. dunno

I am pretty sure she DID say Anne's name. She said it right after she said "I'm so sorry" and then she said Anne, Meryl, Kristin....so on.

While the Globe wins undoubtedly boosted its public profile, I still think Slumdog remains at best a third choice for Best Picture come Oscar time. The Best Drama winner at the Golden Globes hasn't won the Academy award for Best Picture since 2003 and I don't see that streak being broken this year.

The fact that it has won numerous critics groups awards is meaningless if recent history is any indication. The fact that it won a Best Picture award from an international\foreign press body is hardly surprising, either, given that it was probably the most international of the films nominated.

When it comes time to announce the winner on Oscar night, the film's lack of star power and its lack of box office success (relative to Ben Button and Dark Knight) will ultimately hurt it. It is going to top out with a box office gross similar to that of Crash from 2005. It's not going to reach $80M or so of No Country for Old Men and there is no way at all it will reach $100M. Such a little seen film is not going to win the big prize. It will not overcome that hurdle, especially if it stumbles at the SAG Awards which I think is likely.

The film may have its passionate support - and it is a good film worthy of support - but I don't feel that will be enough to carry it to the winner's circle. The little film that could will not be able to climb that last mountain on Oscar night.

"Up" for Best Picture and Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director

I'd put SM's chances of winning best picture at the moment at 80%. Why?

1) Academy members seem to universally love it.
2) There is no other film with remotely the same passion - yes other films have fans, but nothing like SM
3) SM has yet to oepn wide. When it does, backed by its initial TV campaign, it will be outgrossing CCoBB head to head in the weeks between the nominations and the awards, which will end whatever advantage CC has in terms of being a financial success. It could hit $100 million before the awards.
4) The other factor - its being the farthest removed from Hollywood of any best picture winner - has pretty much been answered by the nearly across the board nominations it has received from craft guilds.

I can't come up with a plausible scenario for any other film winning at the moment. Maybe things will change, but they are more likely to change to increase SM's chances.

What's up with Brangelina snubbing Ryan Seacrest?

I thought they supported gay guys (LOL!)...

Seriously, is there a reason for causing such a public stink — perhaps The Wicked Wizard of Oz can give us one of his "unbiased" explanations...

Heath's award going to his daughter Matilda. This from Access Hollywood.

FIRST PUBLISHED: January 12, 2009 7:27 PM EST
LAST UPDATED: January 12, 2009 7:45 PM EST
PERTH, Australia --
Heath Ledger’s mother has said that the late actor’s 3-year-old daughter, Matilda, is expected to be the recipient of her father’s first ever Golden Globe, which he was awarded posthumously on Sunday night for his role in “The Dark Knight.”

“I should imagine that eventually it will be going to Matilda,” Heath’s mother, Sally Bell, told People. “At this stage she is only so young, but down the track she will have all these things. It will belong to her because she is part of him.”

Sally, who lives in Perth, Australia, the city of Heath’s birth in 1979, said she was boarding a flight, when she found out her son had won his first Golden Globe, resulting in “a few tears.”

“There is a lot of emotion tied up in this,” Sally said. “We have to deal with that emotion first before we can relax and enjoy the moment, if you know what I mean.”

The honor caused Sally, who is no longer with Heath’s father, Kim Ledger, and her family to “burst with pride.” And, Sally said it would mean more down the road when Matilda gets a little older.

“It is such a fantastic and wonderful legacy for his daughter. Matilda will have so many people who will be able to speak to her about her father’s abilities and [the] respect he had in the industry,” Sally said. “That is such a wonderful legacy to leave.”

Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York City apartment on January 22, 2008. His death was eventually ruled an accidental overdose.

I thought Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baron Cohen were frickin' HILARIOUS!!!

The way I see it, if celebu-twats cannot laugh at the Golden Globes, that proves they cannot laugh anywhere, and I even like Madonna!

I felt the same way---i got worried because even if i don't intend to be mean a comment can come across as rude because it's just an internet post and they have no way of knowing what my intention was.

I can think of just a few people, Brian Fronz (head of ABC Daytime), Jill Farren Phelps (Executive Producer of General hospital) and possibly Beyonce or Kate Winslet that migh be offended by comments i've made.

Praying The Daytime Emmys air on TV in 2010!

Oh, Boidiva, I wouldn't worry about them. If they're offended about your comments then they'll definitely be offended by mine, especially Beyonce! LOL!

Who knows? At the Grammys, maybe Beyonce will tell US to "SUCK IT" LOL!!

Ouch! Well, probably the same people who tell us she can write songs — that is, as long as there are five or so other songwriters also getting credited...

owww. that's harsh. even i wouldn't go that far. All i know is that we shouldn't turn this into a bashing Beyonce thread. The whole point that Tina Fey was trying to make is that we need to be nicer to celebs! afterall celebs are people too, they have feelings!
