Most pleasant surprises: "Happy-Go-Lucky" nominated for Best Picture and Rebecca Hall (one of the year's biggest revelations) nominated for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". I wish Scarlett Johansson had also made it. She continues to prove she has genuine talent.

I'm glad "Sex and the City" didn't receive any nominations because the movie almost destroyed my fond memories of the series.

The biggest shock is "Milk" receiving just one nomination. The Spirits also snubbed the movie in the two big categories, so I wonder what this means for Gus Van Sant's chances.

Worst nominations: Tom Cruise (although "Tropic Thunder" was hilarious and should have made it in the comedy category) and the two nominations for the awful "Burn After Reading". Frances McDormand was much better in "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day".

Ron Howard nominated for pedestrian directing again? (sigh)

The Golden Globes are a joke!

The awards show wasn't missed last year....and no one will see it this year again.

McDormand was much more deserving for "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day"... and yes "Burn After Reading" was godawful.

These nominations are almost what I expected. I'm abit surprised of the omission of The Sex and the City not being nominated, I thought for sure it would be (not that I'm a fan).

I'm so glad the Heath got a nomination. Hopefully, he'll win this award. But I am disappointed that TDK wasn't nominated for Best Film.

I'm also surprised that Milk wasn't nominated.

I don't think this these nominations are real precursors to The Academy Awards.

So does this basically zilchify TDK's Oscar chances? Shame after it was finally picking up momentum in the critics circles.

It will have no effect on Dark Knight's, Milk's, Gran Torino's, Wall-E's chances.

The GGs are moving, fortunately, into irrelevancy.

Some nominees' reactions:
------------------------------------------------
- A day of happiness is also a reminder of loss for Heath Ledger's family, reports USA TODAY's Anthony Breznican. Heath's father, Kim, and mother, Sally, along with his sister, Kate, released a statement today on news that the actor, who died unexpectedly last January from an accidental prescription drug overdose, had received a Golden Globe nomination: "We thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring Heath's performance in 'The Dark Knight.' This nomination is deeply appreciated and is not lost on those of us who continue to love and miss him. We are so proud that our boy's work is being recognized in this way."

- Danny Boyle, director of "Slumdog Millionaire," is giddy over his first Golden Globe nomination. "I'm buzzing," he told USA TODAY's Donna Freydkin. It's tough to believe that the helmer of "Trainspotting" hasn't been honored before, but he says this time means everything to him. "Oh god. It's just extraordinary. A movie like this, it doesn't matter who you are, you have to have someone championing you. Now you get the HFPA. They stand up for you. I want to thank them. It's an unbelievable distinction," says Boyle.

- Marisa Tomei's publicist woke her up with the good news for nomination as best supporting actress in "The Wrestler" at home in Los Angeles. "I'm stumbling around the house naked in the dark," she told USA TODAY's Dona Freydkin. To celebrate? "Maybe I'll have a chocolate croissant or two." But, she adds, "I have to take my cat to the vet. It's a big exciting plan. I have to keep that appointment because it's very hard to get it. That cat is a diva more than I will ever be," she jokes.

- Andrew Stanton, the director and co-writer of "Wall*E," told USA TODAY's Anthony Breznican the Pixar team will "pop a bottle of champagne."

- Sally Hawkins of "Happy-Go-Lucky" told USA TODAY's Kelley Carter: "How am I going to celebrate? A pint of champagne? A couple of them."

- Tom Wilkinson, nominated for "Recount" and "John Adams," told Kelley he'd be having something else: "I'll sit down with my wife and daughter and have a glass of wine, I think."

- Shirley MacLaine, 74, on her Golden Globe nomination for playing Coco Chanel in a Lifetime biopic: "I am really thrilled! I guess I should dress up more. Maybe Chanel could do a couture line for seniors?”

- Hugh Laurie's reaction his Golden Globe nomination for "House": "I am thrilled. Nine feet tall and thrilled."

- Kevin Connolly was thrilled with his first nomination for his role as Eric Murphy in HBO's "Entourage." "This is my first anything. Very honestly, there aren't any words to describe it," he told USA TODAY's Bill Keveney. "This is the greatest day of my life." He says he wasn't even thinking about a nomination. "I didn't know it was today. So when the phone rang (a little past 5:30 a.m. in Los Angeles), it was a little unnerving. It's usually not good getting calls at that hour."

- Jeremy Piven and the series itself also received nominations. "The most important thing is that the show get nominated. It means you get another year." That's already been assured. Shooting for Season 6 starts in March, he says.

I disagree. Burn After Reading wasn't a GREAT movie, but I liked it enough and it certainly wasn't godawful! Also thought Pitt and McDormand were the best thing about the movie so I am thrilled that at least she got nominated for it. I'm glad she's back on the awards scene/radar period(even if this is the last nomination she'll get).

Still fuming over no Josh Brolin! There couldn't have been six nominees in Supporting Actor? Hell, haven't they had seven somewhere before?

I'd heard Shirley Maclaine was unspeakably awful in Coco (as was the whole movie). But she's a "name," so on with the show.

No Milk! That is surprising! Only one nomination? Well, I still expected to get into Best Picture.

Another snub for Michael Fassbender for Hunger, expected.

Extremely happy for Kate Winslet! Double nominee! Kate has 5 nominations at the Golden Globes for the 5 nominations she has at the Oscars. Now she has 2 more to add to that! Best Actress of her generation!

I do not want to disappoint our Japanese public, especially Godzilla. Hahaha! I'm just kidding, I know he doesn't care what humans do.

LMAO. Miley Cyrus is listed as a nominee for Original Song on the HFPA site. I'd imagine she's the youngest person to ever be nominated in that category.

More nominee reax:

"I couldn't be more thankful," said perpetual Entourage nominee Jeremy Piven. "Times are incredibly tough and to have a job like this is wonderful."

Brad Pitt, nominated for his age-defying role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, said he was "pleased to be nominated for this award."

"We're all very proud of the film and thankful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our work."

Alec Baldwin, nominated once again for 30 Rock, kept things even more succinct: "I am thrilled and indebted to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association," he said.

Also quick to give thanks—and props—on the television side was Mad Men main man Jon Hamm, who scored a Best Actor in a TV Drama nod and whose small-screen leading lady, January Jones, scored her first nomination in the lead actress category. The basic cable show that could was also nominated as Best Drama.

"I am humbled and flattered to be named among the company of excellent actors for this year's nomination," Hamm said. "Additionally, I am incredibly proud that the hard work of all of our cast and writing and production staff and crew was recognized in the show's nomination.

"Lastly, I am thrilled that my costar January Jones' work was recognized this year. To be recognized and validated among the community is an honor indeed. Many, many thanks to the HFPA!"

As for the fairer newly minted Golden Globe nominees, the ladies were just as effusive and inclusive with their thanks.

Critical darling Emma Thompson, who scored a Best Actress in a Comedy nomination for her role opposite Dustin Hoffman in Last Chance Harvey, was overwhelmed by the recognition.

"Dustin and I had the best time making this film," she said. "It seems insane to get an award nomination on top of that, but I'm thrilled."

Added Hoffman: "It is so exciting to be nominated, but working with Emma was reward enough. Don't get me wrong, I still want to win!"

Best Supporting Actress nominee Amy Adams credited not only her costars but the writer for her nomination.

"I am so honored to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Doubt along with John Patrick Shanley, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis," she said. "Helping to bring John's Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the screen was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career."

Brothers & Sisters Best Supporting Actress nominee Rachel Griffiths also shared her nomination with her cast, and offered a public congrats to costar Sally Field, who scored a Best Actress nod for her work.

"When I got a phone call early this morning, my heart dropped because I thought my nanny was calling in sick!!! I am so thrilled! It is a joy to go to work every day, and this is the icing on the cake. Congratulations to Sally!"

Marisa Tomei, who is up for Best Supporting Actress for her work alongside Mickey Rourke, a Best Actor nominee, for the big-screen drama The Wrestler, also called out her costar.

"I am absolutely thrilled and cannot be happier that The Wrestler has been given so much attention. It is such an honor for the HFPA to have recognized my work and Mickey's in this beautiful film."

Comeback kid Rourke seemed to have similar sentiments.

"I am truly honored the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has recognized my work in The Wrestler. It was a very special role for me, so I am particularly grateful and thrilled."

As for Paul Giamatti, another actor who should probably be used to such critical attention by now, was enthusiastic anew over his nod for Best Actor in a Miniseries for John Adams.

"It is a hugely gratifying honor to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press. I am also really happy the miniseries continues to generate so much enthusiasm. It was a great experience to be a part of."

Directors and producers also wasted no time in heaping praise on the teams that contributed to their nominations.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button's David Fincher said he was "indebted to the entire cast and crew," and gave "a special thanks to the people of New Orleans for embracing the production and giving us so much support and inspiration."

Sam Mendes, nominated for Revolutionary Road, said he was "delighted and honored" that the film was recognized "in such a generous way. This was a labor of love for all of us and to see it being received in such a positive way is very gratifying."

Meanwhile, Eric Fellner, one of the producers on Frost/Nixon, one of the nomination leaders, congratulated his team but also called out the apparent snub of Michael Sheen, who plays Frost to nominee Frank Langella's Nixon (the grateful Langella said his "collaboration with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer was one of the best experiences of my career").

"He's a key component of the piece, so it's a real shame he wasn't able to get a nomination," Fellner told BBC News. "But I hope he realizes and feels that any success the movie has is his as well."

I am thrilled for Leo and Kate and RR. Most surprised by the lack of a BP nom for MILK.Most surprising nominee is Tom Cruise. Happy TDK was snubbed in both BP and BD.

Yeah, I saw her on a talk show promoting the movie and she didnt even attempt a french accent in the movie. She said something like she didnt even want to and "when you get Sean Connery in a role you dont ask him not to speak with his accent" or something ridiculous like that. I'm sure she was awful, I know the movie looked bad.

I love Kristen Bell, but I didn't expect her to be nominated for "FSM". I would have put Sarah Jessica Parker in over her, and I saw both movies.

Her lack of a nomination for this particular role is not a snub, nor does it make the nominations the worst ever.

Isn't is sad that she has to keep proving it, though? Girl is damn good, and one day she'll get the respect she deserves.

I loved FSM and liked Bell in it, but it no way was she worthy of a nod. Still, Hall was as engaging to watch in VCB as viewing glue dry. Cruz was that film's sole worthy award contender.

Congrats Kristen! All the PD haters can (SPOILER ALERT) Suck it!

The Good:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Mickey Rourke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Kate Winslet, James Franco, Rebecca Hall, Sally Hawkins, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heath Ledger, Amy Adams, Viola Davis, Marisa Tomei, Ron Howard, John Patrick Shanley, Bruce Springsteen, A.R. The Bad:
Entourage & Tony Shalhoub

The Snubs:
The Dark Knight, Milk, Richard Jenkins, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, James Franco, Dev Patel, Michael Shannon, Rosemarie DeWitt, Taraji P. Henson, Christopher Nolan, Gus Van Sant, Dustin Lance Black, Mike Leigh, Jenny Lumet, Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan, & David Goyer, James Howard Newton & Hans Zimmer (TDK), Howard Shore, Breaking Bad, The Mentalist, The Big Bang Theory, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who?, Simon Baker, Bryan Cranston, Lee Pace, Jim Parsons, Holly Hunter, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, House of Saddam, Yigal Naor, Stephen Dillane, Harvey Keitel, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, & Jean Smart

I completely agree. Although I think she has already more than proven herself it is nice vindication after every time she racks up another big nomination. I really hope she gets her third Oscar nomination for The Wrestler. That way all of that fluke talk will hopefully be dead forever after she's received her third nomination. A nomination, if she gets it, for The Wrestler should be her fourh in my opinion.

Also of note, If Marisa gets her third nod here that puts her ahead of such gals as Nicole Kidman, Hilary Swank, Sally Field, Reese... None of them have three nominations! More proof Marisa has nothing to prove to anyone!
