The only Golden Globe nominated movies I have not gotten a chance to see yet are Rachel Getting Married, Last Chance Harvey, and I've Loved You So Long.
My detailed analysis:
Best Motion Picture - Drama The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Frost/Nixon The Reader Revolutionary Road Slumdog Millionaire
This is definately a 2 way race between Button and Slumdog. Button has the star power that the Globes like but Slumdog has the international power and is more uplifting.
Predicted winner: Slumdog Millionaire Personal Preference: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married Angelina Jolie – Changeling Meryl Streep – Doubt Kristin Scott Thomas – I've Loved You So Long Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road
Toughest category of the night to predict. And the one with the highest stakes. The winner could be going head to head as the alternative to Sally Hawkins for the Oscar and could gain the extra edge to take the SAG. And still we dont seem to be sure which way its leaning for such an important category. All nominees have their champions and detractors.
I'm gonna rule out Jolie and Scott Thomas. I think Winslet, after seeing both performance, will have a stronger chance to win in supporting for The Reader. I think it comes down to Hathaway and Streep. And with Doubt doing so well in the nominations and with more buzz, and Rachel not doing as well I think Streep wins.
Predicted Winner: Meryl Streep Personal Preference: Meryl Streep
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama Leonardo DiCaprio – Revolutionary Road Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon Sean Penn – Milk Brad Pitt – The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
All besides Pitt are deserving. My heart says Rourke, my head says Penn. I do think Rourke has a strong shot not only because he was great but because Milk under performed so badly.
Predicted winner: Sean Penn Personal Preference: Mickey Rourke
Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy Burn After Reading Happy-Go-Lucky In Bruges Mamma Mia! Vicky Cristina Barcelona
If there were any justice In Bruges would win. And if not it either Barcelona or Burn After Reading. I disliked Happy Go Lucky and thought Mamma Mia was Mamma Messy. They do love musicals but even the Globes have to have their limits right? I think Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a safe compromise and a way to honor Woody's return to form.
Predicted Winner: Vicky Cristina Barcelona Personal Preference: In Bruges
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy Rebecca Hall – Vicky Cristina Barcelona Sally Hawkins – Happy-Go-Lucky Frances McDormand – Burn After Reading Meryl Streep – Mamma Mia! Emma Thompson – Last Chance Harvey
I'd vote for McDormand in a heart beat, but Hawkins should be a lock.
Predicted winner: Sally Hawkins Personal Preference: Frances Mcdormand
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy Javier Bardem – Vicky Cristina Barcelona Colin Farrell – In Bruges James Franco – Pineapple Express Brendan Gleeson – In Bruges Dustin Hoffman – Last Chance Harvey
I never thought I'd say this at an awards show but....GO COLIN! Either him or Gleeson winning would make my night and lets face it, both of them need this recognition a hell of a lot more than either Javier Bardem or Dustin Hoffman do. Bardem and Hoffman need another award almost as much as George Bush needs another term in office.
Predicted winner: Javier Bardem Personal Preference: Colin Farrell
Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture Amy Adams – Doubt Penélope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona Viola Davis – Doubt Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler Kate Winslet – The Reader
Good race here. I know a lot of people are gonna be predicting either Cruz or Davis based on their critics awards performances. Remember Amy Ryan, Virginia Madsen, and Julianne Moore? Well I think they can win critics awards from now until Thanksgiving and it may not make a difference seeing Winslet's role is so much meatier and juicier than anyone's in this category, category fraud or not. The critics groups obviously werent going to vote her supporting in the open votes held in their groups. Winslet did manage a supporting win in Chicago and a couple of LEAD wins for this role. Not to mention she's really overdue and The Reader did surprisingly well here in the nominations. I think Adams will draw enough support from Davis to hurt her. Tomei has also done will with the critics and I loved her as well. I just dont see her winning. Def see a Cruz vs Winslet race here and right now...I'm thinking Winslet.
Predicted winner: Kate Winslet Personal Preference: Kate Winslet (everyone here is good)
Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture Tom Cruise – Tropic Thunder Robert Downey Jr. – Tropic Thunder Ralph Fiennes – The Duchess Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
Easiest category to call.
Predicted Winner: Heath Ledger Personal Preference: Heath Ledger
Best Director - Motion Picture Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire Stephen Daldry – The Reader David Fincher – The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon Sam Mendes – Revolutionary Road
Predicted winner and Personal Preference: Danny Boyle
Best Screenplay - Motion Picture The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Written by Eric Roth Doubt Written by John Patrick Shanley Frost/Nixon Written by Peter Morgan The Reader Written by David Hare Slumdog Millionaire Written by Simon Beaufoy
I'd be fine with anyone but Benjie Button winning. But I think they will go for Slumdog.
Predicted winner: Slumdog Personal Preference: Slumdog or Frost/Nixon
Best Television Series - Drama Dexter (SHOWTIME) House (FOX) In Treatment (HBO) Mad Men (AMC) True Blood (HBO)
The Globes love honoring new shows and they love HBO so that leads me to think its In Treatment vs True Blood. Mad Men could repeat again though. Nominations for Melissa George and Blair Underwood tell me they must be ape sh-- over In Treatment.
Predicted winner: In Treatment Personal Preference: Mad Men
Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama Sally Field – Brothers & Sisters (ABC) Mariska Hargitay – Law & Order January Jones – Mad Men (AMC) Anna Paquin – True Blood (HBO) Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer (TNT)
The Globes, unless its Sarah Jessica and Sex and the City usually love to spread the wealthy around in the winners for TV which rules out Hargitay and Sedgwick. Field has won before in movies and is on a network show that isnt as edgy as the Globes usually like. I think its between the 2 newcomers which sucks for me because I'm not really crazy about either one of their work.
Predicted winner: Anna Paquin Personal Preference: Kyra Sedgwick
Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama Gabriel Byrne – In Treatment (HBO) Michael C. Hall – Dexter (SHOWTIME) Jon Hamm – Mad Men (AMC) Hugh Laurie – House (FOX) Jonathan Rhys Meyers – The Tudors (SHOWTIME)
This is def between Byrne and Hamm. Hamm did win last year but is so hot right now and after all he wasnt there to accept last year. But they do love In Treatment. Hmmmm, flip a coin.
Predicted Winner: Jon Hamm Personal Preference: Jon Hamm
Best Television Series - Musical Or Comedy 30 Rock (NBC) Californication (SHOWTIME) Entourage (HBO) The Office (NBC) Weeds (SHOWTIME)
I have to imagine 30 Rock has this. Coming off 2 straight Emmy wins but havent won the Globe yet for Best Comedy. Plus most of its competition here is stale.
Predicted Winner: 30 Rock Personal Preference: 30 Rock
Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy Christina Applegate – Samantha Who? (ABC) America Ferrera – Ugly Betty (ABC) Tina Fey – 30 Rock (NBC) Debra Messing – The Starter Wife (USA) Mary-Louise Parker – Weeds (SHOWTIME)
This is def Applegate vs Fey. Both have a lot going for them. Besides both being terrific, Applegate has the cancer angle and Fey has the Emmy wins and the Election sensation impersonation of Sarah Palin. Fey did win last year...but didnt get to accept.
Predicted winner: Tina Fey Personal Preference: Christina Applegate
Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock (NBC) Steve Carell – The Office (NBC) Kevin Connolly – Entourage (HBO) David Duchovny – Californication (SHOWTIME) Tony Shalhoub – Monk (USA)
I just cant imagine any of these guys beating Baldwin.
Predicted winner and Personal Preference: Alec Baldwin Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television A Raisin In The Sun (ABC) Bernard And Doris (HBO) Cranford (PBS) John Adams (HBO) Recount (HBO)
All good movies but John Adams will win easily. But I loved Cranford more.
Predicted winner: John Adams Personal Preference: Cranford
Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television Judi Dench – Cranford (PBS) Catherine Keener – An American Crime Laura Linney – John Adams (HBO) Shirley MacLaine – Coco Chanel Susan Sarandon – Bernard And Doris (HBO)
Strong category, I'd go with Keener, but Linney will win.
Predicted winner: Laura Linney Personal Preference: Catherine Keener
Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Ralph Fiennes – Bernard And Doris (HBO) Paul Giamatti – John Adams (HBO) Kevin Spacey – Recount (HBO) Kiefer Sutherland – 24 (FOX) Tom Wilkinson – Recount (HBO)
Lock. Giamatti.
Predicted winner and Personal Preference: Paul Giamatti
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Eileen Atkins – Cranford (PBS) Laura Dern – Recount (HBO) Melissa George – In Treatment (HBO) Rachel Griffiths – Brothers & Sisters (ABC) Dianne Wiest – In Treatment (HBO)
I think the In Treatment ladies cancel out. Griffiths has won for 6 Feet Under. I think its Atkins vs Dern and while I think Atkins deserves it easily, Dern has HBO!
Predicted winner: Laura Dern Personal Preference: Eileen Atkins
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Neil Patrick Harris – How I Met Your Mother (CBS) Denis Leary – Recount (HBO) Jeremy Piven – Entourage (HBO) Blair Underwood – In Treatment (HBO) Tom Wilkinson – John Adams (HBO)
I think its Underwood vs Wilkinson. Call it a hunch, but I think Underwood wins it.
Predicted winner and Personal preference: Blair Underwood
Other categories: Best Orginial Song: The Wrestler Best Orginial Score: Curious Case of Benjamin Button Best Foreign Languard Film: Waltz with Bashir

Why so many Anna Paquin predictions, I mean really? I love True Blood but it is high camp and her performance reflects that in some ways...I could see the show winning, but her?

The Globes love to reward new shows, so giving Paquin the win would be a way to honor True Blood.

I wouldn't necessarily call it support, I think Applegate is a better comedic actress than Fey, it's just that Tina Fey became a practical superstar this year, mostly due to Palin, and the Globes love to award hot young stars so it just seems obvious that they'll award her (again).
And I hate how Ferrera keeps getting nominated for subpar work. She's the ultimate filler nominee. She'll never win anything ever again and yet she's always there nominated. The same could be said for Sally Field in Drama Actress.
Some think that America's performance has rebounded this year. Although it seems impossible for her to get any worse than last year. If no Ferrera, who would you replace her with taloson?
