I think the films likely in the running for best picture from the top critics groups are:
1) "The Hurt Locker" 2) "Up in the Air" 3) "White Ribbon" 4) "Precious" 5) "An Education"- some LA and NY critics really love it 6) "A Prophet" 7) "A Single Man" 8) "A Serious Man"
Best Director: See Above
Best Actress: 1) Carey Mulligan- "An Education" 2) Meryl Streep- "Julie & Julia" 3) Gabourey Sidibe- "Precious" 4) Charlotte Gainsbourg- "Anti-Christ" 5) Tilda Swinton- "Julia"
Best Actor: 1) Colin Firth- "A Single Man" 2) George Clooney- "Up in the Air" 3) Michael Stuhlbarg- "A Serious Man" 4) Jeremy Renner- "The Hurt Locker" 5) Christoph Waltz- "Inglorious Basterds" (may be up for best actor rather than supporting actor) 6) Morgan Freeman- "Invictus"
Best Supporting Actor: 1) Christoph Waltz- "Inglorious Basterds" 2) Alfred Molina- "An Education" 3) Peter Sarsgaard- "An Edcation" 4) Richard Kind- "A Serious Man"
Best Supporting Actress: 1) Mo'Nique- "Precious"
I don't really think she'll have much critical competition but possibly...
2) Julianne Moore- "A Single Man" 3) Rosamund Pike- "An Education" 4) Melanie Laurent- "Inglorious Basterds" 5) Vera Farmiga/ Anna Kendrick- "Up in the Air"

Hopefully some of these critics groups will deem UP worthy of a nomination, and perhaps a win here and there. I also thought Ben Whinshaw was equal to Abbey Cornish in Brightstar. A SAG nomination would be a really nice surprise.

2 year old dog with weak back legs. What could it be?
How's your dog doing now? I'm interested in hearing what the vet says when you get him there. I hope all is well with him and that he is just lazy. My oldest dog, Bubba is paralyzed now, but when he was younger, and before he became paralyzed, he was the laziest, most laid back dachshund I had ever seen. He didn't like to run in the back yard like with the other dogs; he just went out and did his business and sat at the back door until I called the others in. Hopefully your dog is just a bit lazy, like Bubba. Also, one of my dogs, Lilly, walks with a twisty butt, like a woman trying to look sexy. She is a dachshund crossed with who knows what, but perhaps there is some breeds that walk like this. Also, ALL of my dogs lay down sometimes with their legs behind them, so I don't find that odd. However, if he is sitting that way, then I would take the advice given by others and get him to the vet. Bubba is the only one of my dogs that sits sometimes with his legs behind him, but he is paralyzed, although he is getting some movement back (hurray! )

I just saw An Education. A very well made coming of age movie - but not a "best" for film or direction. Even the acting, while done well, is generally not award-worthy. Mulligan and Molina are fine. Pike makes remarkable out of nothing, but the part is inconsequential. Sarsgaard comes off best - nicely subtle in a complex role - but it doesn't blow you away.
As for Tilda Swinton in Julia: phenomenal in a "B" movie role. She makes Julia real. But I'm not sure the role is deep enough to compete against Streep and Sidibe.

They should be able to get recognition from some city's critics awards. There haven't been that many good movie out this year. There should be room for recognition somewhere for these films, especially Cherri.
