To be quite honest, these are boring winners that are trying to be exciting. Waltz winning Best Picture is quite a surprise and totally different, but then we have Sean and Sally sweeping the lead awards. Though the supporting wins are quite a wake up call... I'm surprised they didn't give Happy Go Lucky the award for Best Picture with all of the awards the NSFC gave them. Though I am happy for Man on Wire and especially Razzle Dazzle. I'm was quite happy to see this film recognized. I have always wanted to see it since I saw the trailer, but it hasn't come to the U.S. yet... It's about a dance teacher who is like Michael Scott from The Office and it is shot like The Office... In fact, here's the very funny trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZS9fHB3WGQ

I don't think that this RAZZLE DAZZLE is the one you're thinking of. The one you want to see (and rightly so, it is a good movie) is directed by Darren Ashton.
"A lot of midgets tend to kill themselves. The disproportionate, I meant. Herv Villechaize offed on Fantasy Island. I think somebody offed on Time Bandits. I suppose they must get really sad about like being really little and that people looking at them, laughing at them, calling them names. You know, short arse. There's another famous midget. I miss him but I can't remember. It's not the R2D2 man; no, he's still going. I hope your midget doesn't kill himself. Your dream sequence will be ****ed."

I'm very happy about this year's choices! The National Society of Film Critics is the group that most consistently reflects my tastes (Pan's Labyrinth, There Will Blood, etc.) Waltz is powerful and also my favorite picture this year (with the current Gaza crisis, it couldn't be timelier!), as is Eddie Marsan's supporting performance: his crazed driving instructor was even scarier than Heath Ledger's nihilistic Joker! As the mother of a slain lesbian, Hanna Schygulla was magnificent in The Edge of Heaven and it's great that she was recognized. On another note, let me say that I get very tired each year of people on this site complaining of boredom when there's a consensus among groups and critics about who deserves recognition, as this year with Penn and Hawkins: why not better spend your time intelligently and eloquently discussing the films and performances that were meaningful for you.

Nice post. I am so happy to see Eddie Marsan and Hanna Schygulla in this line up. Hanna's film came and went here so quickly, I missed the chance to see it in the theatre. It was playing only in one art-house place. I've always been a fan of hers. I'll never forget Marsan's Scott. He was simultaneously aggravating, sympathetic, and tragic, and he was the perfect foil for Sally Hawkins. I actually love that Best Actress three. And congratulations to all of the winners and nominees. I'd love to see Mike Leigh in the Oscar race, but, at this point he seems like a real long shot.

My website and blog are taking a little break, since Geocities is closing and I now have to upload everything to a new site, so I am working on a new design and it is gonna take me a while, hoping to get it up by Oscar Season.
Glad to see Eddie Marsan pick up one of these. Also, makes me wish I would have predicted him over James Franco but I had a hard time predicitng him for best actor when I was not picking Sally Hawkins for best actress. I was wrong on that count too. In fact I was wrong on everything with this critics' group.

Well, that is good to know! Now I feel like an idiot, but now I know that the Razzle Dazzle that I want to possibly see is a good movie, so it's all good!

Again I admit it is silly but I feel like making some predictions today. My very early predictions for the National Society of Film Critics Awards are...
Best Picture: "White Ribbon" Best Director: Michael Haneke- "White Ribbon" Best Actor: Jeremy Renner- "The Hurt Locker" Best Actress: Gabourey Sidibe- "Precious" Best Supporting Actor: Richard Kind- "A Serious Man" Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique- "Precious" Best Screenplay: "A Serious Man" Best Cinematography: "White Ribbon" Best Documentary: "Food Inc." Best Animated Film: "Ponyo"
No foreign language film winner since I see best picture going to a foreign film.
