NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The Producers Guild of America said Monday it would double the number of slots for its Producer of the Year Award to 10, following the lead of Oscar organizers.

The guild's top award is a fairly accurate predictor of the best picture Oscar, which also goes to producers.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences said in June it would double the size of the best-picture race, in what was believed to be a reaction to the snub of such crowd-pleasers as "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E."

PGA president Marshall Herskovitz nodded to the Academy's earlier decision but said that wasn't his group's sole motivation.

"The PGA board approved the expansion of our best produced picture category nominations to support our colleagues at the Academy, but also because we feel it better represents the unprecedented diversity of films being produced today," he said.

Supporters of slot expansion argue that the move makes for a more inclusive awards season and spreads

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Too bad the PGA decided to do this on the same year the Academy Awards expanded their Best Picture slate to 10. Now they'll be accused of copying the Oscars, rather than make this decision independent of them. Just like all the other awards organizations independently pushed their schedule forward to earlier in the year and were unfairly accused of trying to predict/influence the Oscars.

But on a serious note, I also think this proves that we have too many forums. The news is significant enough to be posted in the regular Oscar forum. But when it's posted here, only the most diehard readers will find it.

I think that's true re the diehard readers. But, there's also a 'comfort' factor for me, in the relative obscurity of these threads.
Most of us eventually find the information somewhere, but in the meantime, it's good to know this thread exists.
