I think Slumdog wins by a landslide, short of some cosmic shift somewhere. Recently, Little Miss Sunshine won SAG Ensemble and went on to lose at Oscar. So, it happens.

I don't think "Slumgod Millionaire" is going to win best cast but still believe it is far ahead in the race for te best picture Oscar. I believe "Doubt" will win best cast, though "Milk" is a strong contender too, and yet that film does not even seem likely to be a best picture Oscar nominee so that shows how tenuous the connection may be. "The Birdcage" won best cast and I do not know if that film was nominated for any Oscars. "Slumdog Millionaire" is mostly a technical achievement and is not going to win any acting Oscars- it may not even receive any acting nominations. Best picture, director, screenplay are near locks with the film likely to win some combination of editing, score and cinematography as well.

The only chance I see for Slumdog winning ensemble, is if the overall love for the film carries the voters in a tidal wave, because I dont see ANY film beating it at Oscar (for BP).
Doubt might be a front-runner, but Frost/Nixon has an incredible cast, and I can see it upsetting, more than even Milk, which also has a chnace. So no; even if/when Slumdog loses SAG Ensemble, I dont believe it will stand in it's way of a Best Picture win. And if it wins, then there's no doubt in my mind.

I think it's a shame if Slumdog takes best ensemble.
The category it's not best PICTURE..it's best ENSEMBLE.
Even if they are not strong best picture contenders, Rachel Getting Married, Revolutionary Road and Vicky Cristina Barcelona all should have come before Slumdog in this particular category.
I wish one day the Academy add best ensemble in its categories, and really just judge the acting there.
Of these nominees I hope the win it's between Doubt and Milk.
In 2009 the three best TV female performances in a drama series were all snubbed. Shame to Emmy voters for not nominating January Jones, Alison Pil and Chloe Sevigny.
If they don't reward Slumdog Millionaire they might honor The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Of the ensemble only Cate Blanchett has won an Actor (she has won 2 with 12 nominations). Yet, this makes Brad Pitt's 3rd nomination, Tilda Swinton's 3rd nomination, Taraji P. Henson's 5th nomination and none of those 3 have ever won before, so they might decide to honor them all.

I didnt want to say this in print! I would LOVE to see that happen. But I think it's a really long shot.

I would totally Love to see this happen too! I can totally see it happening. I think the films with the strongest cast in it are both The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk. I can see either these films winning the Best Cast award.

I'd be surprised if Slumdog wins this...not that it is not deserving but that everyone is a virtual unknown. I would say Milk has got the edge here...great ensemble work and Doubt could be a spoiler.
What does help SM is that if the voting body feels that by rewarding Penn and Streep in Lead, they did their duty of honouring Milk and Doubt and can cast the Ensemble vote to SM (actors appear to really love this film and may want to give it something).
If Slumdog wins, who would even accept the award? Patel, Pinto... the Millionaire host who was belligerent at the Globes? Hm. That'd be like, the smallest ensemble acceptance ever (Sideways was even bigger than that). As much as I loved Slumdog this is one award it certainly does NOT deserve to win, and if it does, the overratedness has officially gone overboard.

If you include the various child actors that was a large cast and the child actors were excellent.

I was talking about actually physically accepting the award... I can't imagine those kids will be there? The child actors were good but they really just played themselves - little kids. They didn't necessarily move mountains.
And if Patel and the cast of Slumdog lose their respective nominations, and Slumdog becomes the eventual Best Picture winner, it will be the 5th Best Picture winner in the award's 15 year history that will win BP without a SAG award win, joining Braveheart, The English Patient, Gladiator, and The Departed.

This would be the eighth time. Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, and Million Dollar Baby also lost their respective best ensemble awards.

I think he means without any SAG win at all. "Titanic" won best supporting actress. "Mind" won best actor and supporting actress. "Baby" won best actress and supporting actor.

"Doubt" is a real possibility but I think it's between "Slumdog" and "Milk".
Milk represents the type of film that wins here on the basis of being a real ensemble effort - meaning in basic terms that it has a lot of scenes in which a lot of the principals act together (a la The Birdcage, Gosford Park, The Full Monty, Little Miss Sunshine).
And of course Slumdog love being what it is, you've gotta give it as good a chance as any.
