It would be nice if the DGA thumbed their noses at the Oscars and gave their award to Christopher Nolan to emphasize the fraud the Academy perpetrated on the American moviegoing public by screwjobbing The Dark Knight. At least that's what my heart hopes.
My head says different, and they'll tow the line and do the predictable, even if Boyle doesn't deserve it.

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? I do not have enough predictions for a full post, but I will say that it would be nice to see Jack Bender win after being nominated for Emmys in 2006 and 2007.

I second that. Danny Boyle will win the Oscar anyway.

TV DRAMA SERIES: Jack Bender, Lost ("The Constant") Matthew Weiner, Mad Men ("Meditations in an Emergency") -i give the edge to Bender, but a tie is possible. Taylor is strong here too.
TV COMEDY SERIES: Paul Feig, The Office ("Dinner Party")

I'm going to see it eventually. In any other year, yes; Boyle would be my choice. But THIS YEAR, Nolan was better; nevermind the fact he directed TDK without a second unit. It was all first-unit quality.

So you know Nolan was better even though you haven't seen Boyle's film? Ummm, OK.
You should have just said you had not seen the movie and left it that. Even saying Boyle would be your choice in another year seems silly when you admit you haven't seen it. You might love it. You might hate it. You just don't know.

Another little tidbit occurred to me based on your post. Peter Jackson had many units shooting different things on his "Lord of the Rings" films. Does that lessen the quality of his films as he used multiple units? What percentage of those films did not seem "first unit" quality to you?

A good Director first and foremost needs to be able to communicate his/her vision to the crew. I don't understand why anybody gets extra credit for not doing this, especially on a film like The Dark Knight where there is clearly stuff that could've been shot by a second unit. In fact not doing so suggests that Nolan is a bit of a control freak.

Ah, forget Nolan and Boyle. My head's going with Fincher.
No, I do think that Boyle will win here and at the Oscars. But let's not forget that Benjamin Button was, just like past Best Picture winner American Beauty, as much about its look as it was about its story. I think a Slumdog-Fincher split at the Oscars wouldn't be surprising.
My DGA Predix:
FEATURE FILM - Boyle, "Slumdog" DOCUMENTARY - Folman, "Waltz" TV MOVIE/MINISERIES - Hooper, "Adams" TV DRAMA SERIES - Bender, "Lost" TV COMEDY SERIES - McCarthy-Miller, "Reunion" VARIETY PROGRAM - Gunts, "Olympics" CHILDREN'S PROGRAM - Diamond, "Camp Rock" REALITY PROGRAM - Munster, "Amazing Race" DAYTIME PROGRAM - Carpenter, "One Life to Live" COMMERCIAL - David Fincher
What commercial did David Fincher direct, anyway?
---- OSCAR FYC: Best Picture - "Up" Best Actor - Michael Stuhlbarg, "A Serious Man" Best Actress - Saoirse Ronan, "Lovely Bones" Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz, "Basterds" Best Original Screenplay - "Up"

I concur. We know Boyle will get either BP, BD or both at the Oscars. So, why not honor Nolan? I seriously doubt it, though. The DGA winner is also the Oscar winner 95% of the time. I did see SM and thought it the most exciting of the current nominees, but like a lot of people, I was hoping for more TDK love in the top categories.
